Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course grade value by its credit hours, adding those quality points together, then dividing by the total number of credits attempted.

Does an A+ count above 4.0?

Many schools cap an A+ at 4.0 on the standard scale. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, so both A and A+ count as 4.0.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA only includes the classes from one term. Cumulative GPA includes all completed coursework, which is why prior GPA and prior credits matter.

Can I use this for college and high school GPA?

Yes, as long as your school uses a standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA systems that add extra points for honors or AP classes will need a different scale.

Why do credit hours affect GPA so much?

Courses with more credit hours carry more weight because they contribute more quality points. A grade in a 4-credit class affects GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit class.
